Kanchanaburi is Thailand 's third largest province lying 130-kilometres west and a comfortable 2-hour drive from Bangkok .
Kanchanaburi is famous as the site of the world-famous Bridge Over The River Kwai, immortalized in books and movies. Beyond the compact provincial capital, where the Kwai Yai and the Kwai Noi rivers unite to form the Mae Klong River , Kanchanaburi unfolds into a rugged beautiful landscape characterized by waterfalls, caves and tranquil riverside settings. A sparsely populated province much of which has been preserved in National parks, Kanchanaburi is a treat for nature lovers and cyclists.
Staying in a floating raft houses and a riverside jungle lodge, we ride along amazing trails through the jungle and alongside the famous River Kwai.
Starting in Bangkok , we first visit the sites of Kanchanaburi Town before taking the Death Railway to Krasae caves. After lunch we visit an elephant camp and an optional elephant ride can be had before we get on the bikes. We start our riding at Krasae caves and we head towards Prasat Muang Sing, a Khmer temple that dates back to the Angkorian period of the 12th Century. We enjoy an afternoon riding through stunning countryside, small Thai villages and teak plantations to the very beautiful Pung Waan Resort, nestling on the banks of the River Kwai.
On the second day, we have a colourful full day riding great jungle trails. Red laterite roads contrast beautifully with the green of the jungle and blue skies. The scenery is awe-inspiring with limestone cliffs punctuating a mountainous skyline that rolls towards Burma in the west. By mid afternoon we arrive at our jungle hotel which is equipped with a riverside swimming pool. Enjoy a massage, a beer or take a boat trip to visit a nearby Mon village!
The final ride is a touch more challenging! Enjoy some unforgettable descents through the jungle and a magnificent riverside ride beside a tributary of the Kwai Noi. (only in the dry season), otherwise we ride to Hellfire pass on the road.
e visit the museum and the pass itself and then we stop for lunch before driving back to Bangkok and your hotel.
Day 1 Bangkok – Kanchanaburi - Death Railway – Kwai Noi (Pung Waan 32 km L,D)
After the pick up from the hotel we leave Bangkok and begin the journey west.
After visiting the sights in Kanchaniburi, the War Musuem, the cemetray, the famous bridge we take the train along the death railway to Krasae caves. After a visit to the caves and lunch and we start the biking here and we ride to Wat Prsat Muang Sing along some quiet country roads, passing small Thai villages and Teak plantations. Once we reach the historical park, which is believed to have been used by the Khmer empire as a trading point along the Kwai Noi River in the 12th century, we ride the around the park and visit the museum before packing up the bikes and transferring the short way back to the riverside hotel.
Dinner is in the excellent restaurant situated in the hotel.
Day 2 Ban Kow – River Kwai Noi (Resotel 45 Km B,L,D)
Today the ride will take most of the day as we take a leisurely pace along some great trails. This ride is filled with a vast array of colour as we have the red laterite trails the greens of the jungle of course the blue skies. This trail has some stunning view of the valleys that surround this area and we ride through some great jungle and cultivated land. The ride is a little more challenging than the previous days with some undulating terrain and a gentle climb of about 2km (but can be avoided). This ride gives us a great chance to see the rolling hills that separate Burma from Thailand .
We arrive at the out hotel in the mid to late afternoon and we have a choice of massage, beer by the pool or take a boat trip to visit a Mon village.
Dinner is at the restaurant in the hotel.
Day 3 Kwai Noi – Hellfire Pass – Bangkok 25 km B,L
The ride to day is a bit more challenging as although mainly downhill there are a few small up hills but nothing to strenuous. The main downhill need to be taken with some caution as it is partly off road a little bit steep. The reward is to do some riding through primary jungle and the trail follows a small river which meanders down to the river Kwai Noi and makes for a stunning ride.
Once we have completed the ride we take a short hop across the river to visit hellfire pass which was the name given to the 1000m of mountain cuttings through rock and soil with only the most rudimentary implements. We also have a chance to visit the museum before we have lunch.
After Hellfire pass we have the chance of a local lunch of BBQ chicken, sticky rice and the spice Thai salad, somtam. After lunch we continue back to Bangkok and drop off at hotels
This trip is suitable for most levels of riders and is an excellent trip for families.
