DIVING IN BADIAN ISLAND

The Philippines undersea world has extensive reef systems, dense, colourful marine life and warm tropical water (depending upon the season 27°C to 30°C). It is estimated that in the Philippine Reefs there exists most underwater species in the world. There are more than 2,000 species of fish and more than 800 species of soft and hard coral. Amazing visibility up to 50 meters and it is possible to dive 12 months of the year.

BADIAN ISLAND DIVE SPOTS

BADIAN ISLAND: Direct at our Island, we have 3 dive sites:

  • Coral Garden: This is our closest dive spot which is only about 5 minutes away and also our primary snorkeling site. There is a large variety of soft and hard coral on the shelf. There is a sandy area which we use for OPEN WATER Training Dives.
  • Fisherman's Cave
  • Badian Wall

At the 3 sites, the drop off begins at 3-5 meters. You can see many fan and large green corals. There are many small caves throughout the sea. Sometimes you can see Turtles. This is a good area for Night Diving. The currents are small to medium. Visibility averages 15-25 meters.

CEBU-BADIAN ISLAND

Between the 2 Islands, we have two dive spots in our bay:

  • Anchorage: Shallow water and sandy bottom. It is a nice place down to 10 meters and forms like a channel. There are varied old rose corals, coral fishes and anemones. The visibility is good and there are hardly any currents.
  • Hammer Point: The reefs start at 8 meters which look like a hammer and drops to 45 meters. You can see exotic sea creatures like hard and soft corals, big seafans, trigger fish and all kinds of coral fishes.

PESCADOR ISLAND

It is located about 20-30 minutes boat ride from Badian Island depending upon weather conditions.

  • Gorgonian Colors: The southwest side has a gradual slope 10 meters with many hard corals and small fishes. From 10-25 meters there is a great abundance of gorgonian coral of many color. Between 20-30 meters there are plenty of overhangs with small caves. You can see many lion fishes in this area.
  • Pescador Cathedral: The cathedral is a very large hole that resembles a grotto, which begins at 15 meters and ends at 38 meters. Inside the grotto, there are a few caves, one of which begins at 18 meters and goes up to 7 meters. The other caves are large cracks, where you can see many Squirrel fish. There are several large windows which you can swim thru.
  • Snapper Point: The drop off begins at about 4 meters. There are many overhangs and ledges between 15-30 meters. In this area, you can see large schools of Black & White Snappers, Red Snappers and Surgeon Fishes.
  • Pescador East: This side is a slope with many coral and basket sponges. On 3 sides of Pescador the wall drops off to 50 meters, then there is a very steep slope. The 4th side is a gradual slope to 200 meters. All around Pescador, you will see many lionfishes, scorpionfishes, clown fishes hiding in their anemone home, different color trumpet fishes, tuna fishes, and if you have luck, you will see some sharks in the deeper water away from the wall. The current at Pescador can get strong depending on the tide. It is a perfect place for drift diving.

Visibility varies between 15-50 meters and averages 25 meters.

MOALBOAL: There are 3 good dive spots near this small town:

  • Tongo Point
  • Visayan Reef

The wall begins at 5 meters and drops off to 70 meters. The fan coral get very large about 2 meters across. You also can see a lot of Gorgonian Coral at about 20 meters. There are many small caves in the area. The current can get strong and the visibility averages 25 meters.

  • White Beach: (Only Day Tours)

You can find one of the best beaches in the Cebu area about 1 hour boat ride from Badian Island. There are two beautiful dive spots here:

  • Panorama Reef
  • Mushroom Reef

These two dive spots are particularly rich in corals and have a bigger variety of small fish than most other dive spots. Divers will find a lot of good caves under the drop off at approximately 25 meters.

LAMBUG REEF: There are two different dive sites at Lambug which is about a 15 minute boat ride from Badian Island.

  • Lambug Fish Feeding:

This area begins at 17 meters. Right now there is a small group of Damsels, small Wrasse and small Groupa taking the bread out of your hands.

  • Lambug Beach:

The wall begins at 3 meters and drops off to about 40 meters. Occasionally, you can see Turtle and a few seasnakes in this side. The visibility is usually 10-20 meters because of the lack of current.

SUNKEN ISLAND: A spectacular dive for very experienced divers only, in the middle of Badian Island and Negros in the deep blue.

After dropping thru 25 meters of open water with strong currents, you will reach the top of an underwater mountain where you can visit schools of Tuna, Jacks and Surgeon. The small Bait Fish are so plentiful, they block out the sun. If you have time you also can see huge Lion and Scorpion fishes and all kinds of coral fishes. If you are lucky, there are a few Frogs in the area. During the months of December to March, Sharks sometimes visit this reef.
