There are overland links between Sabah and Sarawak, and Brunei and Kalimantan in Indonesia.

Licence Requirements
An International Driver's Permit, carried in conjunction with your national driving licence, is a legal requirement for driving in Malaysia. Always make sure documentation is carried with you at all times when driving. Police officers will expect to see documentation if they stop you for any reason.

Which Side of the Road?
Follow Malaysian rules of the road and drive on the left-hand side of the carriageway.

Highway Code
Drivers of large vehicles expect smaller vehicles to give way, even where the latter may have right of way.

Hire Vehicles
Cars for self-drive hire are available from reputable firms. Alternatively, visitors can hire a car and driver. Ask the concierge for details.

Not all roads in the interior of Sabah are paved and a 4WD vehicle is advisable. Hire rates often increase for use outside a 50-kilometre radius of Kota Kinabalu. Please note that all hire vehicles have to be returned to Kota Kinabalu as there are no agency offices outside Kota Kinabalu.
