PENANG
Penang is made up of a 285 sq km island and a 760 sq km strip of coastal land strategically located on the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Penang island is linked to Province Wellesley on the mainland by the Penang Bridge and a 24-hour ferry service. The island derived its name from the betel nut palm commonly grown here. From its establishment as the first British trading outpost in the Far East in 1786, Penang has grown into a bustling city with a unique blend of East and West. Still conspicuous are the early Chinese, Indian, Dutch, Portuguese and British influences which have contributed to make this exotic island "the Pearl of the Orient".
Amid its charming historical heritage, Penang is the clearing house for the nation's wealth with tin, rubber, copra, oil, rice, timber and palm oil being the top commodities traded here. An impressive banking system is complemented by telecommunication that links the boardrooms to world markets.
Its international airport is served by major airlines. An impressive network of road and rail links Penang to the mainland and from there to Bangkok in the north, and Singapore in the south.
Penang's population of over a million comprise 32 percent Malays, 59 percent Chinese and 7 percent Indians, with the other ethnic groups making up the rest. Together, they share a common heritage as citizens of Malaysia.
