| KUALA SELANGOR FIREFLIES TOUR | ||
![]() |
The mangrove swamps on the riverbank of Kuala Selangor are perfect homes to these amazing insects. Also called the "Lighting Bugs", fireflies actually belong to the beetle family Lampridae. On the underside of their abdomens are special light organs called lanterns that glow in luminous flashes. The male fireflies use this light to attract their mates. When the female sees a male’s light, she flashes a response. Flashing back and forth, male and female ensure that they are both of the same species before their mating ritual begins. It is this synchronization of the flashes, with their own distinct codes, that have amazed even the scientists. Bukit Melawati - atop Bukit Melawati, the highest point in the area is the site of the 200-year-old Fort Altingsburg built by the Dutch. This landscaped hill offers a panoramic view of the Selangor coast and the Klang Valley. Shaded by ancient rain trees are several fascinating historical attractions such as the Altingsburg Lighthouse, the Royal Mausoleum, the ruined Fort (Kota) Melawati, the legendary 100 steps, a fabled execution-block, children’s playground and a quaint rest house.
