LAO
PAKO Resort:
Lao Pako is
an ecotourism lodge located on the Nam Ngum river, about 50 kms
from Vientiane, the capital of Lao.
Access is by
an interesting drive from Vientiane to the village of Som Sa Mai.
From there it is approximately 25 minutes by local boat to the resort.
The river trip is fascinating, offering a chance to view natural
surroundings and local lifestyle.
The resort is
constructed almost entirely from native materials using local techniques
combined with European comfort. A lao stlye longhouse contains three
double rooms, each with private ensuite facilities and mosquito
nets, and a seven bed dormitory with a shared bathroom.
On the huge
veranda, which overlooks the river, there is ample space for just
relaxing and taking in the view, reading the variety of books and
magazines or playing chess, backgammon or cards.
The separate
bungalows are for people who prefer privacy. Two beds with mosquito
nets and ensuite facility are combined with large, comfortably furnished
veranda.
Our Lao Pako
bar is the meeting point for all our guests. Visitors from abroad
can meet local expatriates living in Lao while having a cold drink.
The local beer is not expensive and excellent! From the Lao Pako
restaurant you get the best view of the river and the sunset is
magnificent. Our restaurant serves Lao/European dishes at reasonable
prices. Any special requests can be catered for with 2 days advance
notice.
Activities
& the Environment:
Lao Pako offers
a unique, environmentally friendly experience to both the adventure
seeking visitors as well as the guests who simply want to relax
and unwind in a peaceful and quiet atmosphere.
There is plenty
to do and see. Short, interesting walks, village visits, trekking,
plus river rafting and boat tours, can all be easily arranged.
Parties for
special occasions, workshops and seminars can also be arranged.
How to get
to LAO PAKO?
By Car:
Take route 13 from Vientiane to the south. Turn left at km 24 (signposted)
and follow the main road from there (signs at each junction). If
you prefer, and we would recommend it, leave your car at SOM SO
MAI, a small village with a sign "Boat to LAO PAKO" and
take the local boat downstream for about 25 minutes.
The other possibility
is to continue by road after SOM SA MAI for about 12 km. There are
signs along the way. The road is a bit bumpy, but you can manage
it. During the rainy season this part of the road is not recommended.
By Bus:
Take the bus No. 19 to PAKXAP from the central bus station opposite
the morning market "TALAAT SAO". It leaves 6.30am, 11:00am
and 3:00pm and takes about one hour. Get off at SOM SA MAI and take
the local boat, after approximately 25 minutes you will reach LAO
PAKO.
