Here is a list of public holidays in Indonesia. You may use this list as a guide to planning your vacation trip to Indonesia. Public Holidays can be a busy time to travel and flights and hotel accommodation can become expensive or full. Furthermore, if you are planning to travel to Indonesia for business, then you will want to avoid the holidays as offices will be closed during these days.
Muslim festivals are timed according to local sightings of various phases of the moon and so if dates are given above, they are approximations. During the lunar month of Ramadan that precedes Eid al-Fitr, Muslims fast during the day and feast at night and normal business patterns may be interrupted. Many restaurants are closed during the day and there may be restrictions on smoking and drinking.
Some disruption may continue into Eid al-Fitr itself. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha may last anything from two to 10 days, depending on the region. Buddhist festivals are also timed according to phases of the moon and variations may occur.
The following table indicates declared Indonesian government national holidays - cultural variants also provide opportunity for holidays tied to local events. Beside official holiday, there are the so-called "libur bersama" or "cuti bersama", or joint holiday(s) declared nationwide by the government. Please notice that there are two Islamic New Year in 2010 because Islamic Calendar 10-11 days shorter than Gregorian version. In total there are 14 public holidays, and 9 "cuti bersama" or joint holidays.
Indonesian Government has set a national holiday and common leave for the year 2010 as many as 17 days, consisting of 14 national holidays (four of which fall on Saturday or Sunday), and a maximum of 3 days of common leaves. This early announcement of national holidays, religious, and common, among others, is to prevent employees skipping work taking advantage of the holidays.
This decree is stipulated in the Joint Decree which was signed by Minister of State for Administrative Reform, Minister of Religious Affairs, and Minister of Manpower and Transmigration. “It is also intended for staff / employees leave planning, so that operational activities of the office / unit organization can run well,” said Minister Taufiq Effendi, in Jakarta, Friday.
