The Hungarian Parliament is prominently situated on the east side of the Danube River in Budapest, the nation's capital. Completed in 1902, the building has 18 courtyards and nearly 700 rooms.


Lake Balaton, located in the western portion of Hungary, is a popular vacation spot for boating, swimming, and fishing. A passenger boat is shown here.




Farm women harvest the season's crop in a plum orchard. About one-half of Hungary's total area is used for farming. Crops provide about 60 percent of the country's agricultural production; livestock accounts for the other 40 percent.

 





This giant four-towered cathedral in Pécs, Hungary, has a crypt dating from the 11th century.

 



Festetics Palace is located in Kesthely near Lake Balaton in Hungary. It was begun around 1750 and is still being used today for cultural events. Concerts are held in the grand music room or in the courtyard during warm weather. The palace also contains a fine art collection and a library with over 50,000 volumes.

 





Small houses with thatched roofs sit on a hill in the Hungarian countryside. About one-third of Hungarians live in rural areas.

 





This bend in the Danube River, located about 64 km (about 40 mi) north of Budapest, is one of the most scenic places in Hungary. The famous Danube flows east from the bend to form part of the northwest border with Slovakia.
