The boat leaves the center of Bandar, traveling past the old and new Water Villages housing towards the mangrove-lined waterways. Moving quietly along the narrow mangrove channels, stopping to listen and look for the birds and animal life such as macaques, crocodiles, monitor lizards and some large animals that call the mangroves home. If you are lucky you can observe the shy proboscis monkey which is only found in Borneo. In Brunei, the reason why you may not have to travel too far to see these monkeys because they co-exist with human settlements and therefore there is still an abundance of this endangered species along the mangrove swamps, as most of the local community consists of Muslims, who do not depend on killing wild animals for their food. Crocodile and other animal sightings have been increasing in Brunei. Guns are banned and in combination with free public services, (including education, public health and medical), housing assistance, and the general standard of living, the economic pressure that leads to habitat destruction and native animal hunting is largely absent. Crocodiles and other wildlife find Brunei a safe haven. You will return on dusk past the Sultan’s Palace for what are probably the best photos available. The boat returns to the center of Bandar Seri Begawan stopping along the way to visit a local house to have morning or afternoon tea.
