| DESCRIPTION | The
Rainforest area we will take you to is in one of Brunei's forest reserves,
this area has never been logged and is still in its primary state. Several
species of gian dipterocarp trees tower up to 50 meters. The peat swamp
is dense with vegetation including numerous growths of the colourful
lipstick palm, Cyrtustachys Renda. This unique area of natural heritage
is home to many rare species including the Sun Bear, Borneo Gibbon, Clouded
Leopard (Borneo's largest wild cat), and 8 species of hornbill. With our local knowledge and experience we invite you to join our camping tour and observe the fauna and flora of Brunei's pristine tropical rain forest in the best way possible. Getting close to nature and discovering the secrets of the natural world in this way is a rare opportunity, which should not be missed. Camping in the wild is truly a great experience, sleeping in tents surrounded by the sound of nature. There is no electricity, no tap water and only "dug-up" toilets facilities. We will travel by road from Bandar Seri Begawan, a 1 1/2 hours drive into the heart of the Tutong District. Breakfast will be at local cafe before arriving at the rangers post to register. The rainforest trek begins with 30 to 45 minutes walk through primary tropical low land rainforest to the campsite. On you will set up your tent provided for the night and after a short rest an introduction to jungle safety will be given. After the talk we will trek deeper into the dense rainforest. Your experience jungle guide will explain to you the differences between the various types of rainforest, the habitat and ecology of the different species of flora and fauna endemic to Brunei and an insight into the various traditional herbs used by local community as traditional medicine. A local lunch will be served in the traditional leaf platter. Depending on fruit availability and fruiting season you may have the chance to taste local Bruneian fruits which grow in the rainforest. The trek will continue through fresh water swamp forest following animal trails. Guest should be aware that there ano clearly defined trails in this area and that some places may be muddy, wet and slippery. On the return trek you will be given the opportunity to lead the group back to the starting point. The objective being to let people experienced path finding for them selves and to become more confident in their own ability in the confusing environment of the dense forest. Once back at the campsite you can wash in the cool refreshing clear-river close by. Dinner will consist of traditional food. At 2200 hrs we will go back for a night walk in search of nocturnal animals. DAY 2 0430 hrs rise up for coffee and a dawn walk to the traditional observation tower. The path travels through the swamp forest where we can stop and count on different colours of fireflies. From the top of the 4 meter tower we can observe the wild life as the sunrises and daybreaks. During the months of February and March, Myna Birds and 8 different species of rare hornbills will come near to the tower. On returning to the campsite you can enjoy your breakfast, swim in the river, relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the rainforest. At 12:00 pm we walk out from the rainforest and back to the vehicle. We will have our lunch at a local cafe before returning to BSB. We should arrive back at your hotel by approximately 1400 hours.
